Converse’s Chucks for a Cause

At least 19 candidates from the 2016 Miss Universe competition lent their time and creativity to produce customized Converse sneakers to be auctioned for the Positive Action Foundation.  A foundation supported by the Ms Universe organization, Positive Action Foundation is devoted into helping individuals living with HIV/AIDS and their families particularly those who are displaced from their employment due to HIV phenomenon.

EVO Nature Camp, Cebu’s Newest Adventure-Based Camp

In today’s world of modern technology, people need to take a break from all their hectic work schedules and the energy-consuming high demands of city living to enjoy and find adventure in the outdoors. During their soft opening last Saturday, Evo Nature Camp owner Edwin Ortiz, disclosed the upcoming activities and future plans they have at hand for the developing camp.

“We came up with this kind of recreational venue to promote Gaas and one day, put in the map as a top destination for nature-enthusiasts at the same time, we are helping the locals get employed,” he stated in a sitdown interview with the media.

Evo Nature Camp is a great venue for outdoor sports activities. In fact, the place is designed for trekking, rapelling, camping and glamping or glamorous camping—another prospect addition to its offerings wherein big tents will be put up together with nice beds, food and some snacks to go with it,” he added.

While the market for glamping are millennials, young professionals and families, the target for Evo Nature Camp’s future big camping site are elementary and high school students.

Ortiz shared that they are eyeing educational institutions as their target market since schools conduct camping activities such as summer camp for the students and the place is a great camping site.

As of the time being, the area for camping is still on developmental status and what is offered are camping in the gazebos.

The Grill House offers bbq, grilled specialties, corn soup, pumpkin soup, fruit shakes, etc.

Around 40,000 flower plants and 2,509 Pine Trees and Giant Ferns have been planted in the property.

The traditional ribbon cutting to officially open Evo Nature Camp last January 11 was spearheaded by Owner Edwin Ortiz and family, together with Balamban Mayor Alex Binghay, Congressman Pablo John Garcia, and Gaas Barangay Captain William Genel. The event was also witnessed by the senior high school students from the University of San Jose-Recoletos Balamban Campus, guests and friends from the local media.

Food from Cebu towns, cooking battle at the Capitol

Eleven Cebu towns vying for cooking glory clashed last 18 to 19 at the Cebu Provincial Capitol for the 2017 “Eats Meets West”, an annual cooking event organized by the Provincial Government through the Provincial Tourism Office.

Eats Meets West is the output of the Cebu Community-based Ecotourism Project of the Provincial Government that was started in 2015. It was intended to help develop authenticity and pride of place highlighting the value of local cuisine

The grand opening took place on November 16 in Tuburan town, which showcased its homegrown coffee.

On November 17, a whole-day “Food Forum” was held at the Capitol Social Hall, with seven experts taking on topics like the ancient diets of Cebuanos, what Cebuano cooking really is, healing with food, organic farming, and design for food. The speakers were Dr. Ame Garong of the National Museum, Mike “Chef Tatung” Sarthou, Teresa Ruelas, Eleonor Rivera, Vince Cinches, Cristino Villamor, and Manila’s Ige Ramos. The forum, which was open to the public, was attended by 265 guests.

The “Food Festival” also started on the same day, November 17, with different stalls located at the back of the main Capitol building offering different foods from several Cebu towns. The 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. food festival lasted up to November 19.

The culinary competition took take place in the next two days, or on November 18-19, with the towns competing for the honor to be adjudged as having the best appetizer, welcome drink, dessert, main course, welcome lei, pasalubong, table set-up, and packaging.

The towns also competed to come up with the “best interpretation” of a Cebuano recipe from a 1923 cookbook of Maria “Señora Inday” Fadullon Rallos.

One special highlight of the event was the cooking demo by Vice Governor Agnes Magpale, who prepared her version of the leche flan.

She said the dessert holds a special place in her heart as it was the dessert she prepared for her husband right after their honeymoon .

Her tip on how to come up with the best leche flan? “Always, you put love into your cooking,” she said.

Globe, DQ Institute, DepEd collaborate to nurture digital intelligence in public schools

 

Globe Telecom, in partnership with the DQ Institute and the Department of Education, are leading the way in nurturing digital intelligence in the country. With more and more Filipino having access to the internet and smartphones, there is a growing need for discerning online citizens nationwide.

The commitment of Globe, the DQ Institute, and DepEd includes measurement of the digital intelligence quotient (DQ) of our youth through pilot surveys in public schools around the country. The study will serve as a benchmark to nurture and improve our digital intelligence as a nation.

In conjunction with the research, Globe continues its push for increased digital literacy and online responsibility in schools through two key programs. Through the Global Filipino Schools (GFS) Program, every DepEd division in the country is provided a teacher training hub to bring 21st century learning in public schools through technology. The program equips one showcase school per division with free internet connectivity, mobile ICT equipment for learning, and teacher training on ICT integration in the classroom. Currently, there are 143 GFS learning institutions in 15 out of 18 regions around the country. Next year, Globe aims to bring the GFS Program to all 18 divisions.

The showcase schools, in turn, train teachers in neighboring schools on 21st century learning approaches through technology. Also, through the company’s Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP), students and teachers are provided free workshops on responsible digital citizenship. Workshops cover principles on online safety and security, online etiquette and responsibility, online leadership and empowerment, and how to identify false information from credible information online.

As part of the partnership, Globe will be undertaking a DQ test in 12 schools under the telco’s GFS program. The test is part of a national study to determine and measure the digital intelligence of kids in public schools in the Philippines. DQ is defined as the sum of technical, mental and social competencies essential to digital life. It encompasses the skills and values that are needed to thrive as responsible netizens to answer the demands of the digital era. These skills empower citizens to have ethical and responsible use of technology, an attribute that marks the leaders of tomorrow.

Globe thus becomes the first telco in the Philippines to help conduct this test that will gauge the DQ of the public education sector. Upon completion, the results of the survey will be used as benchmark of cyber-risk exposure and digital citizenship level of students in the Philippines. This will provide Globe first-hand data to help it further improve the area of digital learning among GFS school members through its DTP. It can also provide the opportunity to discover new ways or modules for learning.

The national study is part of an international DQ Study, the preliminary results of which shall be presented during the 2018 World Economic Forum to be held in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland.

The study is derived from DQ World.net (https://www.dqworld.net), an online education platform that teaches Digital Citizenship Skills to kids aged 8 to 12 in order to empower them to become discerning digital citizens. DQ World was developed by the DQ Institute, an international think-tank committed to improving digital education, culture and innovation through cross-sector collaborations, global dialog and big data research. It is a spin-off group from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and Infollution Zero in South Korea, formed as a coalition in collaboration with the World Economic Forum.

“Globe Telecom is supporting DQ Institute in determining the digital intelligence quotient of the Philippines through the multinational DQ Study. This enables us to create new learning techniques to elevate the learning experience of children in the Philippines. Through our Global Filipino Schools, we will be able to help more students adopt to the new digital environment and help shape the future leaders in our country,” said Globe Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications Yoly Crisanto.

“We strongly believe that the cultivation of digital intelligence will help lead children of today to become not only capable citizens in, but also passionate and innovative leaders of, tomorrow’s digital economy. There are eight core DQ citizenship skills that children must be equipped with:

  • Digital Citizen Identity, which is the ability to build and manage a healthy congruent identity both online and offline with integrity.
  • Screen Time Management, which helps kids manage their time in front of the screen—multitasking and engaging in online games and social media with appropriate self-control.
  • Cyber Bullying Management, which is the ability to detect cyberbullying situations and handle them wisely.
  • Cyber Security Management, which is the process of protecting sensitive data through the creation of strong passwords and managing various cyberattacks.
  • Privacy Management, which is the ability to handle with discretion all personal information shared online for full protection of one’s and others’ privacy.
  • Critical Thinking, which is the ability to distinguish between true and false information, good and harmful content, and trustworthy and questionable contacts online.
  • Digital Footprint Management, which is about learning and understanding the nature of digital footprints and their real-life consequences and how to manage them responsibly.
  • Digital Empathy, which is being empathetic to the needs and feelings of the kids, as well as that of other users, online.

Zonta Club of Cebu II Reaps Awards at District Conference

As an organization that seeks to empower women through service and advocacy, Zonta International believes it is important to recognize its clubs and districts for their outstanding service projects that benefit women in their communities. These awards serve to highlight the incredible service work that Zontians perform to improve the lives of women and girls in communities across the globe. The District Awards are given at the end of each biennium at the District Conference and recognizes significant contributions to the empowerment of women and gender equality. Awards are presented to clubs who have accomplished district goals in such areas as advocacy, service, public relations. Zonta Club of Cebu II is an active member of District 17 composed of as 76 clubs with 2,461 members from the Philippines, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore and Macau.

Members of Zonta Club of Cebu II participated in the District 17 Conference held in Hong Kong in last October 2019 where the club reaped honors for innovative and trailblazing service endeavors for women and children in the community. The club received recognition for the Best Centennial Local Service Project for “Breakthrough behind the Cells”, a series of medical missions that benefited female inmates at the Mandaue City BJMP. It also received an award for the Best Centennial Advocacy Award for the package of activities that marked the annual “18-days of Activism” where different stakeholders took part in symposia and empowering workshops on effective strategies to eliminate Violence against Women (VAW) to encourage broad participation by emphasizing that everyone has a role to play, engaging not just duty-bearers but also other stakeholders especially at the local level.

Since the organizations founding in 1919, Zontians have dedicated the last century to empowering women, both in and outside of Zonta. To celebrate these achievements, Zonta Clubs all over the globe were encouraged to undertake Zonta Centennial projects and Zonta Club of Cebu II was recognized with the Centennial Anniversary – Honour 100 years of Zonta Award for their “100 books for 100 families project and for the Giant Photo Tarp that was displayed at the Ayala Center where 100 women from various sectors in the community called with one voice to “Say No to Violence Against Women and to Say Yes to Gender Equality”.

Not stopping there, Zonta Club of Cebu II garnered the Centennial Leadership Development Award and the top award that recognized the club’s overall contribution to the ideals of Zonta International in Service, Advocacy, Education and Leadership Development, the Centennial Star Club in Excellence Achievement Award – Diamond       Category.
